Configuration Manager

Summary:

Familiarize with the Configuration Manager Graphical User Interface of EMC ControlCenter.

Objectives:

a)                 Identify Symmetrix with un-configured capacity.

b)                 Create Symmetrix Logical Volumes.

c)                 Map Symmetrix Logical Volumes to Front End Director Port(s).

d)                 Perform the steps necessary to reconfigure the host to access the newly mapped Symmetrix Logical Volumes.

e)                 Create Meta Volumes.

f)                   Change Device Type Definitions.

Configuration change sessions require exclusive locks on the Symmetrix for the duration of the change. For this reason multiple change sessions cannot be simultaneously, initiated on the same Symmetrix.

  1. Identify Symmetrix with un-configured capacity.

    1. Select “Properties” from the Tool Bar and then select Storage from the Tree Panel. Look for the column “Unconfigured Capacity” in the Target Panel.

    2. Is there Unconfigured Capacity available on the Symmetrix assigned to your lab group? What is the Symmetrix Serial Number:_____________, Unconfigured Capacity: _________________

  1. Create Symmetrix Logical Volumes.

    1. Identify the Primary Symmetrix Agent for your assigned Symmetrix. Select “Agents” from the ECC Administration drop down menu. Then select your assigned Symmetrix from the Tree Panel. The primary agent can be identified by the blue line connecting the host to the Symmetrix.

    2. Right click on your assigned Symmetrix and select Configure followed by Logical Device Configuration. Configuration lock is acquired.

    3. In the Logical Device Configuration window, enter the required fields as suggested by your instructor. Verify and select Execute.

    4. After successful completion, verify that the new devices are available by expanding your assigned Symmetrix in the Tree panel. You should see the new devices under the Standard Devices folder in the Unmapped Devices.

  1. Map the newly created Symmetrix Logical Volumes to Front End Director Port.

    1. Determine the Front End Director Port(s) your assigned host is attached to. This can be done using the Path Details view.

    2. Select the device to be mapped in the Tree panel. Then access the icon for SDR operations from the menu bar. Configuration lock is again acquired.

    3. In the Target pane of the SDR window, select the Front End Director Port to which you want to map this device. If the automatically selected Target ID/LUN is not suitable, then double click in the “Address” column to change the TID/LUN assignment.

    4. Execute the task.

    5. In the Visual Symmetrix view, verify that the device has been mapped to the Front End Director Port.

  1. Reconfigure host to access the newly mapped Symmetrix Logical Volume(s). If you are not familiar with Device Masking functions and commands, please ask your instructor for assistance.

    1. Update the VCM database to enable your host to access the newly mapped device.

    2. Perform any necessary reconfiguration activity on the host to make it recognize the presence of a new device. This may include reboot.

    3. If possible, run the syminq command on the host to verify access to the assigned Symmetrix Logical Volume.

5.      Create a Meta Volume.

    1. Select your assigned Symmetrix in the Tree panel, and then access the icon for Meta Device creation from the menu bar. Configuration lock is acquired.

    2. Select the meta device members in the Source pane of the Meta Device Configuration window. Select the type of meta device “Concatenated” or “Striped” in the Target pane. Next select “Execute”.

    3. Verify successful creation by looking in the Meta Devices folder under the Unmapped Devices folder of your assigned Symmetrix.

  1. Change device type definition.

    1. Right click on your assigned Unmapped Standard device and access Configure -> Device Type Definition. Configuration lock is acquired.

    2. Select the device in the Edit view of Device Type Definition window. Select the appropriate action. Choose BCV, as we want to change the Standard device into a BCV. Note that the type immediately reflects BCV, however change is not committed until “Commit” is selected.

    3. Verify successful conversion by looking for your device under BCV Devices in the Unmapped Devices folder of your assigned Symmetrix.

END of exercise.

Good Luck!
