Windows9X Printing

Introduction to printing

  • Windows generally provides you with a printing environment that is easy to configure, use, and monitor.

  • Windows has installation  wizards for installing a printer, we can view the printer features in its properties, and you can monitor your print job in the print manager.

Printer installation

  • Windows 9x provides you with a printer installation  wizard that is both easy to used and quick. There are two sorts of printers  installed on a windows 9x  system, a Local Printer and a Network Printer. Local printers  installed on a computer can be shared on a network  if a network has been setup.

Installing a Network Printer

  • A printer must have been previously installed on a network  on another computer and shared on the network before it can be accessed as a shared printer.

  • Security  is not a big concern in windows 9x  and the printer may have been set with an access password  if the print server is windows 9x.

  • Higher levels of security may be set on the printer in other operating systems that offer greater security such as Windows NT  and Windows 2000 .

Printer Properties

  • Printer properties  allow us to view and change some of the setting of our printers  paper settings, and what is eventually printed.

  • Printer properties  is a direct way of resolving any software  problems such as driver  corruption  and some hardware problems such as printer head cleaning

Background Printing

  • If a slow printer is installed on the computer, then windows 9x  can take a snap shot of the print job and place it in an Enhanced Meta File (EMF ) to be converted  in the background to the final RAW  printer specific image ready for printing and does not interfere with other applications  that the printer could be using.

  • The direct conversion to a RAW  image without an EMF  file can be slow and processor intensive which could interfere with other applications .

Printing a Document

  • You can print any documents by choosing the print option in your application.

  • The print option also allows us to decide on the paper orientation, which pages to print in the document, the quality of the printout and the quantity of the printout.

  • Printing a Document

The Print Manager

  1. Select the printer manufacturer and the actual printer from the lists provided.

  2. If your printer is not on the lists, click on the have disk but ton and install the drivers  from the device CD  or floppy provided by the printer manufacturer.

  1. You can select a previously installed driver  or replace the driver with a new updated driver if you are installing the same printer type.

  1. Select the LPT1  port from the available ports if the printer is connected to your parallel port .

  1. You must now give your printer a name and select if this printer is your default printer.
