Windows 2000  And Windows NT

  • The Windows 2000  serious of operating systems are designed to replace the Windows NT  environment.

  • These operating systems OS contain a similar 32 bit core to the Windows NT  OS offering the speed, security, reliability  of a robust OS.

Windows 2000  And Windows 98

  • Although windows 2000 and windows 98 may look to be similar to each other on the desktop and have common features such as plug and play, support for FAT and FAT32 , internet ready, multitasking, etc the core of the two operating systems are completely different and they are designed essentially for different tasks.

  • Windows 98 is designed for the home environment where as windows 2000 is designed for the professional office environment.

Network State Of Windows 2000

  • Windows 2000  has a platform for all size networks from a peer to peer network  to client server  network servicing thousands of people offering greater security, scalability, and interactivity than windows NT.

Windows 2000  Platforms

  • There are four separate Windows 2000  editions: Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000  Advanced Server and Windows 2000 Data center server each serving a different component of this scalable operating system

Professional, Server, Advanced Server, Data Center Server.

Server Installation Compared With NT

  • Within Windows NT  a single CD  is sold for server but the installation  choices made decide if we install PDC , BDC , or application server.

  • Windows 2000  has a different CD  sold for each one of its server editions with slightly different installation  options, different files  installed and different capabilities associated with each version of windows 2000.

Windows NT                           Windows 2000

Windows Professional

  • Windows 2000  professional was produced as an upgrade to windows NT4 workstation client side networking operating system .

  • Windows professional contains the security and robustness of windows NT4 with the added ease of use and Internet  readiness of windows 98.

Windows Professional  Enhancements

  • Windows 2000  Professional has enhanced features over all other previous windows client side environments which include internet features, simplicity, power management features, reliability , security, plug and play ability, scalability etc.

Windows Professional  Hardware

  • Windows 2000  Professional has support for 2 way Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP ) systems

  • Windows 2000  Professional can cater for up to 4 gigabytes (GB ) of physicals RAM .

  • Windows Professional  is fully plug and playable with support for the new USB  and 1394 ports and devices .

Windows Professional  Web Features

  • Contains a Personal Web Server (PWS ) for creating an Internet  site locally or experimenting with Microsoft specific Internet components (e.g. ASP) before transferring the site to a web  server.

  • The PWS  also has a basic FTP  service available.

  • It has built in support for TCP /IP , IPX /SPX, DLC  and Apple Talk communication  protocols allowing communication with Apple System Novell  servers, Unix  Servers, and other windows operating systems.

  • Windows professional Supports 1 inbound dial up networking session.

Introduction To Windows 2000  Server

  • Windows 2000  server contains all the functionality of windows professional combined with server features rendering it ideal for small to medium sized business applications .

  • Windows 2000  Server has been designed for functions such as a file, print server, application server, web  server etc, for applications  including acting server for branch offices within departments.

Windows 2000  Server Hardware

  • Windows 2000  Server can support both single processor and 4 way Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP ) systems.

  • Windows 2000  Server can cater for up to 4 gigabytes (GB ) of physicals RAM .

Windows 2000  Server Web Features

  • Windows 2000  server supports up to 256 inbound dial up networking session.

  • Windows 2000  server contains Microsoft Internet  Information  Server (IIS ), which is a robust web  server capable of handling thousands of concurrent Internet sessions designed for hasting web sites on the Internet or an intranet.

  • The IIS  server can also be used to publish printer on the active directory  over the internet and setup FTP  sites, newsgroups, chat rooms, and to run all Active Server Pages (ASP) programs  on the internet.

Introduction to Windows 2000  Advanced Server

  • Windows 2000  advanced server is a more powerful server than the standard windows 2000 server with improved availability and scalability that will cater for medium to large sized server enterprise  environments.

Advanced Server

  • Advanced server has support for unto 8 way Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP ) systems

  • Advanced server is able to take advantage of 8GB of RAM  when installed on hardware designed around the Intel  Physical Address Extensions (PAE ).

  • Advanced Server supports two ways clustering  which means that processing can be distributed among servers.

Windows Datacenter Server

  • Windows 2000  Data Center Server  is designed for high-end server intensive environments, which deal with large quantities of data for large numbers of clients.

  • The sort of applications  that the Data Center Server  can be applied to include heavy data base applications, data warehouses, heavy duty web  server ISP  dealing with e-commerce , etc.

  • Designed around the Intel  Physical Address Extensions (PAE ) allowing it to use more RAM .

Windows Datacenter Hardware

  • Data Center Server  has support for 16 way Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP ) systems and 32 ways SMP on its OEM  version.

  • Data Center Server  is able to take advantage of 64GB of RAM  when installed on hardware

  • Data Center Server  supports 4 way clustering  and load balancing  among the servers

PDC  Conversion To Domain  Controller

  • Windows 2000  has made a significant enhancement on windows NT 4 by changing the way objects are defined within the enterprise  environments and ultimately doing away with the PDC , BDC  and replacing them with the domain controller.

Active Directory

  • All domain controllers share the same active directory  database which contains information  about all the objects on the domain including users, resources , applications  and identifies them uniquely which makes searching  for the objects easy and quick throughout the entire organization within the domain.

Windows 2000  Security

  • NTFS  has security built in as part of the filing system. When you format  your hard drive  with NTFS, its permissions  can be utilized which are list , read , write , read and execute , modify , full control .

  • A user account  defines the current user with the user name and password , the groups they belong to, and finally their permissions  in accessing folders  and resources  within the users database.
