Administrative Tools

Introduction to Administrative Tools

  • The administrative tools  contains all the options that an administrator  might need to configure and monitor the windows NT environment and all components defined within it.

  • The administrator  or an administrator equivalent has access to this particular option and has the ability of changing user access to the workstation or domain resources .

  • The administrative tools  are by no means the total number of tools that the system administrator  requires to fulfill their tasks. The other tools for the system administrator are covered in the Other Windows NT  administration tools module .

Key Topics

  • Administrative Tools Components

  • System Backup

  • Disk Administrator

  • Event Viewer

  • Performance Monitor

  • Remote Access Service RAS

  • User Manager

  • Windows NT  Diagnostic Tools

Administrative Tools Components

  • The administrative tools  option inside Windows NT  is the only obvious noticeable deference between windows 9x  and NT’s start menu  options.

  • The administrative tools  contain tools that are used by administrators to configure the system components exclusively related to Windows NT .

  • The administrative tools  components include backup, disk administrator , event viewer , performance  monitor, remote access admin , user manager  and windows diagnostics .

System Backups

  • Windows NT  workstation provides you with backup tools, which allow you to duplicate the required data from the hard drive  on to a tape drive.

  • This Microsoft backup tool built in Windows NT  performs function including

  • Backup  and verify selected files  and folders

  • Append and replace previous backups

  • Backup  system data and the registry

  • Restores selected files  and folders  from backup

  • Schedule  automatic regular backups

  • Logs summary about backup such as when the backup started and failed backup files .

Disk Administrator

  • The disk management utility can be used to manage all the storage devices  on our system directly from within Windows NT .

  • You can use this utility to change drive label, create partitions, format  drives, configure newly added drives, convert  to volumes, setup drive redundancy, etc.

Event Viewer

  • The event viewer  allows us to view previously logged information  regarding the system itself; the applications  currently installed within it and, security factors within the environment.

Performance Monitor

  • The Performance monitor is a windows NT utility to monitor different device activity including CPU , Memory, storage device, network  RAS  etc.

  • If it is used correctly it can identify performance  bottlenecks within our Windows NT  system.

  • The information  produced by the performance  monitor can be of great value to the system administrator  striving to have the system working optimally.

Remote Access Service RAS

  • This is a feature of Windows NT , which allows serial stream connections to be made, controlled and secured using modems  for all incoming and outgoing dial up connections .

  • Windows NT  workstations only support 1 incoming RAS  connection.

  • Windows NT  server supports up to 256 incoming connections.

  • Windows NT  server also provides support for outgoing connections.

User Manager

  • You can use User Manager  or User Manager for domains to add individual users and assign their permissions  on a workstation or a domain. You can also setup groups and add users to those groups. Using groups means that a particular set of permissions can be assigned to a number of users collectively caving time, effort and improving overall security.

Windows NT  Diagnostic Tool

  • The Windows NT  diagnostic  tool WinMSD  allows the user to inspect the different components of Windows NT and is equivalent to the system information  on windows 98.

  • The WinMSD  program can view system information  on the computer including System version, Display, Drives, Memory, Services, Resources, Environment , and network .

  • The WinMSD  program can be accessed from the administrative tools .

  • Windows NT4 provides you with a utility called remote access administrator , which allows the administrator to monitor and control all incoming sessions to our RAS  system.
